Gabrielle Dunayski is a multidisciplinary artist exploring the intersection of Western Christianity and sexual trauma through her work which is inspired by scriptural references, sermons, and personal recollections of growing up in a mega church. Her satirical titles act as a catalyst for her art, demanding a debate or catharsis to take place. Gabrielle’s work delves into systematic abuse within the church, critiquing mistranslated theology that works to uphold the patriarchy and preserve rape culture.
In her practice, painting and performance are an act of immediate reaction: allowing trauma to release directly on the canvas creates an unhinged, fragmented and guttural rehashing of memory and motif. Gabrielle sees her work as visually relaying the internal and psychological effects of religious brainwashing and the perverse nature of western religious ideologies.
